The Greek public transport system has vastly improved in recent years and Zakynthos boasts a reasonably modern and reliable bus service. Prices are very reasonable and there are buses to all main holiday resorts and villages every day

The problem is some of the less busy routes may not offer many buses in a day and these may not fit round the times you want to travel to and from your chosen destination. Also, most of the services are linked to the main town Zakynthos and you will nearly always have to change buses there.

Last year the local government introduced a new bus system which constitutes a continuous circulation of Zakynthos town and costs about 50 cents each time you use it. This was set up with a view to easing the congestion caused by everybody bringing their car into town (however the locals haven't quite got the hang of it yet!)

Finally, don't forget all is not lost as there is also a very reliable taxi system on the island (26950 48400 for the radio taxi centre) with fairly reasonable prices (although you may need to haggle over prices sometimes). Usually a combination of using buses and taxis is the best solution (unless you hire a car during your stay – check out our car hire page)
